Swarm tactics in one or a few drones in a swarm would automatically attack a source of laser beam seems the best IMO. Lasers are more expensive than drones and can`t engage multiple targets in short time. Hard to win if are in the wrong side of the cost equation.

A valuable analysis. The central CDEW problem appears to be architectural before it is protective.

Reflective coatings, evasive manoeuvres, aerosols, counterfire, and swarm tactics all depend on the platform first detecting that it is being irradiated, characterising the beam, and acting within a very compressed engagement window. Without that sensing layer, the countermeasure chain begins too late.

This also means that survivability cannot be treated as a retrofit problem. Counter-directed-energy protection must be designed into the platform’s sensors, materials, autonomy, mission planning, and force employment from the outset.

The deeper contest may therefore be between beam persistence and decision speed: the laser seeks sufficient dwell time, while the defended system seeks to detect, interpret, and break the engagement before that dwell time becomes lethal.
